I need to make clarification. According to my personal daily observation, Verkhoyansk keeps the position of the coldest town in Yakutia, Siberia/Russia. It is usually colder than in Oymyakon. Besides, you have to know, that Oymyakon, the well-known as the Pole of Cold, is not a town or city. It is a little village. So it can be considered as the coldest town on Earth at all. Verkhoyansk has the official status of town.

I like these kind of precision between the two famous places. Population: 1400 vs 500, more or less, isn’t it?

I have seen that this past night

    Korkodon River: – 42ºC

    Sejmchan: -41ºC

    Tompo: -40ºC

    Verhojansk: -40ºC

    and

    Ojmjakon: -38ºC

Yeah, this is interesting to follow weather changes. Right now, Verkhoyansk has -39C, but Oymyakon is already at -43C. Yesterday, it was opposite different :)

  6. amazingsnow says:

    -45ºC today in Oymyakon?

    -45ºC in Korkodon River?

    -44ºC in Sejmchan?

    brrrrrrrrr ….

  7. I am pleased with the precision of measurement both of temperature and population!
    :)

I have been checking periodically, weather changes in both Oymyakon and Verkhoyansk, and founded that from at least 10 days until now Verkhoyansk has been 8 to 10° C colder than Oymyakon, I would think that whaen speaking about mean low temperature Verkhoyansk get the big prize hands down (between these two)…

    • Bolot says:

Right, Claude. Verkhoyansk is much colder :) Oymyakon is easy to get and many people visited that place. That’s why it is more popular than Verkhoyansk :( I would prefer to go to Verkhoyansk.

  9. claude199x says:

Me too. Verkhoyansk is much more unaccessible, as it is 600 km far from Yakutsk and from Oymyakon, lost between the mountains, very isolated. The only thing that worries me is that it must rely on tourism sooner or later, as the population is becoming fewer year after year, I don’t know if this is caused by emigration or by negative demographic growth…Right now they both register -47°C, this is getting interesting…

    • Bolot says:

Hehe. Not now. Right at the moment Verkhoyanks keeps -47C. Oymyakon down to -36C :)

Actually it is easy for me to get to Verkhoyansk. There are 3 or 4 direct flights from Yakutsk to Verkhoyansk. To Oymyakon I need to find other passengers for going to Oymyakon by ground :)
