This December turned out to be very strange in Russia’s West, South and Primorye. Sudden frost replaced unseasonal warmth.

Moscow in cold

The current month began in Moscow without usual snow. On December 3, Russia’s capital experienced 8.2 degrees Celsius. Bears at the zoo were unable to begin hibernating, and mushrooms started growing in nearby forests. On Tuesday everything was changed.

RIA Novosti reported, a vicious frost held Moscow in its grip as record warm weather at the start of December gave way to temperatures of minus 25 degrees Celsius (-13 degrees Fahrenheit) [...]

Current icy temperatures are around 16 degrees Celsius below the norm for the time of year. [...]

But temperatures are unlikely to drop further, the head of the meteorological service Gidrometeobureau said. Alexei Lyahov said the mercury was expected to soar to minus 18-21 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. [...]

It is also reported that in most Russian regions the current temp is 10 degrees Celsius below the norm. Most western, central and southern cities are not accustomed to such extreme cold weather. Thus, heating mains and communal networks couldn’t stand the frost.

In Kazan -30 degrees caused the break of water-main. To repair the tube, comunnal services blocked traffic-overloaded streets, and many buildings were cut off water supply. In Voronezh more than 1000 people were left without heating, because water in heating systems got merely frozen. Vladivostok records the growth of car accidents. In many “shivering” cities kids were allowed not to visit schools.

In Yakutia the situation is different. It is not so cold as it should be in December. Instead of usual minus 40-45 degrees Celsius we have -30C and -35C.
