Four Polish students, including my friend, Maciej Besta, completed the 1st Polish hiking (trekking) expedition up to Mount Narodnaya, the highest peak of Russia’s Ural Mountains (1,894 metres /6,214 ft), in winter 2011.

Closer to the peak, the temperature was minus 40 degrees Celcius.

Further, see 45 cold winter photographs taken by Maciej Besta and the text written by Luba Suslyakova, who runs the blog AskUral.com. Maciej Besta is our common friend.

Last summer, by the way, Maciej hiked across Chersky Range in Yakutia. And it’s him in the cold photo of Deant du Geant Glacier. He is a member of a Polish Travel Club.

Dislike citing newspapers, as I prefer the original content, but… What a nice story The Boston Globe wrote about the life in the extreme weather conditions. In the article “Cold pushes life to the extremes,” the author describes pretty good all sides of such living in the cold…

And, hey, my Siberian city of Yakutsk was mentioned in it. Take a look.

..For further perspective, consider the Siberian city of Yakutsk, where it averaged 40 below zero last week.

Inna Likhachyova, who works at Tour Service Centre in Yakutsk, 3,000 miles east of Moscow, tittered at the idea of 22 below.

“If you plan to come here, you will need a fur hat, fur boots, two pairs of pants,’’ she said. “It is not cold for us, but you might have a different idea of what cold is.’’…

The story contains the video as well. So it is really worth to read.

What a fantastic video Galya Morrell, the Uummannaq Music project co-founder, is sending from New York!

She says, “Major snowstorm in New York brought the city life to a halt on December 26th 2010.”

My God! Snow storms in New York! This is not New York! This is Siberia! Apparently, Siberia arrived to New York!

All these astonishments were loudly said in the Siberian city of Yakutsk. Yup, I am in Yakutsk! And I am terrified! What’s going on?! Is it global freezing? Climate change, definitely!

P.S. Galya, thanks a lot for your amazing video! The video was done yesterday, when Merry Christmas was already over.

Hello, friends!

Just remembered all cold regions, apart from Russia, are going to celebrate Christmas pretty soon! Here are my wishes to you.

Don’t complain about the cold weather, if it happened on your side. Look at my X-mas iPhone video greeting (a sort of) done, while I was standing on the crossroad in front of Yakutsk City Hall this morning. The outdoor temperature was -44C. Presume it is much colder than yours :)

Take care! Have fun! Take your time to find the best gifts in stores! Enjoy the X-mas fever!

Hannes Rada and his frozen eyelashes in Oymyakon, Eastern Siberia, Russia

Hannes Rada, an Austrian friend of mine, has a hobby. A few times a year he travels, as he says, to off-beaten places. He visits so-called authentic areas that are not yet spoiled by tourists and where not so many travelers dare or are able to go. His list of such visited places are pretty long. It would be easy to say that he has been to all continents.

He is also a great photographer. All his travel pictures might be seen on his personal website OffTheBeatenTrack.at.

Moreover, he is a clever cameraman. This time I would like to present videos from his last destinations, the North Pole and the world’s coldest inhabited village of Oymyakon located in Russia’s Eastern Siberia. Enjoy the North!

A winter photo of the Siberian city of Yakutsk. By Bolot Bochkarev.

What type of winter are we, residents of Yakutsk, going to have in a month? Temperatures around minus 40 and 50 degrees Centigrade are for sure. Thick fog. Extreme cold weather is a essential part of the daily winter life of the Siberian city of Yakutsk, the world’s coldest city. Some says it is the same, if living in a freezer. Well, maybe. Never been in a freezer :)

Words won’t be enough to give you a precise feeling. Perhaps, the following winter street photographs I took the last winter will provide you with some ideas. Take a look. (more…)

Frozen Rissbach Gorge

The river Rissbach has it’s origin near the Eng Alp in the Alpine Park Karwendel. It runs after 26 km into the River Isar which runs through Lake Sylvenstein soon afterwards.

Standing on the bridge that crosses the river Rissbach at the famous Rissbach Gorge and marks the border between Austria and Germany. Under the bridge the Rissbach rumbles down the narrow gorge and falls down over a series of three drops. The walls are vertical and have deep undercuts.
