Digged a really funny story at WinnipegSun.com today. A staff writer Joanne Richard raves about the radically inventive Radiance winter jacket which features built in heaters. Thanks to this new gadget, she says, she is no longer afraid of the big, bad cold. She asks readers to call her a snow hottie. Oh! Really?! Nice to meet you, snow hottie :)

Columbia's Snow Hottie and Bugathermo Boot What’s so special about this jacket? Please, read further about it. I would like to know your opinions.

I am trying to be serious and not to laugh until my cries. I just know that local villagers, especially the resident of Oymyakon and Verkhoyansk, will do that. Everytime when they see freezing strangers wrapped up in their ultra warm clothes, they love repeating “There is nothing better than fur clothes.”

So… Let’s read.

Joanne Richard writes “No need to come in from the cold or the freezing hockey arena. With the flip of a switch — just like those heavenly heated seats in a car — I’m warm all over and totally loving it thanks to Mountain Hardwear outerwear.”

In March 2007, a few friends of mine, Yakutsk-based adventure cyclists, Marat, Maverick & Scorpion (don’t know why, but they call each others by nicks), traveled from Yakutsk to Oymyakon, the Pole of Cold. A funny thing. They documented the expedition pretty good. They’ve got a lot of high-resolution photographs, perfect videos and… Since the end of the travel they couldn’t find time to make a full report.

Winter cycling in Yakutia

Recently Marat promised me to make his report with pictures. Time is passing, but he didn’t finish his text yet. Well… While he is trying to find spare time, I decided to create my own post using one of his photos and the video that was done by Maverick for friends’ fun and digged out in the archive occasionally and recently. Here is what we have by now.

Yesterday, on Nov. 1, I wanted to participate in the local GPS orienting, but failed. At the last moment, I couldn’t find my fur boots. They were left in a wardrobe at work the last spring. “Damn,” I said. Without extra warm boots I couldn’t bring myself to stay outdoor the whole day, when the temperature was frozen at minus 20 degrees centigrade.

Well, I missed the event. My wish to take pictures of frozen competitors was great. I do regret, but not so much. My colleague Ekaterina, who managed to compete as a trekker, promised me to bring photographs tomorrow and share them with the rest of the world. So, rejoice.

Meanwhile, check out how trekkers can look like, when it is extremely cold. Here we go!

That's Katerina. She was trekking along the hills around Yakutsk at -30C. Nov 16, 2008.

One day in Yakutsk, Oct. 30, 2009

That day was cold. As low as minus 19C in the morning and minus 23C in the evening. Brrr. We are going streight down. Just in a month, we are going to experience the first minus-forty-degree days. Winter is gaining ground!

Amazing. It is cold outside in Yakutsk. On Oct. 30, 2009, the temperature is as low as -20C. But this guy keeps skatboarding on the main square in Yakutsk, the coldest city on the Earth.
