It is already a big event and a big tradition. This year The Children of the Arctic International Festival is arranged by Shparo‘s Adventure Club under the support of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation for the third time. It started at the Youth Almaz Center in the town of Ruza on Aug. 20th and ended in Korelia on Sep. 02.

More than 100 children from the Arctic regions participated in the festival. They were from 11 Russian ones (Arkhangelskaia Oblast, Vologodaskaia Oblast, Moscow, Murmanskaia Oblast, Nenetzky Autonomous District, Karelia Republic, Komi Republic, Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Taymyrsky Dolgano-Nenetzky Municipal District, Chukotsky autonomous district, Yamalo-Nenetzky autonomous district as well as from Greenland, Denmark, Iceland, Sweden.

The mission remains the same and, probably, won’t be changed ever, as it is the key stone of the mordern Arctic youth. It’s to unite children of the Arctic region to settle the common problems under the slogan “Our Arctic – Our Future.”

The Festival is carried out by the Organizing Committee, including prominent official authorities of Russia such as Dr. Arthur Chilingarov, Special Representative for Arctic and Antarctic Issues to the President Russian Federation, Vasily Zhukov, academician, Rector of the Russian State Social University, Dr. Dmitry Shparo, General Director of the Adventure Club.

And you know what? There was our friend Galya Morrell, co-leader of Uummannaq Music Project.

Members of the Ran herders collective after the court decision.

What a great news! Happy about the Samis!

The Swedish Supreme Court has upheld the lower courts, in a landmark decision that recognizes the rights of Sweden’s indigenous population and their reindeer herding.

The following news story was posted on Alaska Dispatch as part of Eye on the Arctic, a collaborative partnership between public and private circumpolar media organizations.

A very active Serge Weber, who is definitely not indifferent to the Sami people’s well-being, provided me with the link to today’s news story Lack of Sami translations in northern Sweden.

Its first abstract tells everything about the issue:

“A Swedish Radio News survey shows that despite the one-year old law making it a requirement for the local governments in northern Sweden to provide information and services to the indigenous, Sami, population, only 2 of 14 bother to do this – sparkling angry reactions from those safeguarding Sami rights and culture.”

Well, I need to say that it’s a pretty common problem in the circumpolar world.

Winter holidays in Stockholm, Sweden. Street pictures by Piero Damiani.

Winter holidays in Stockholm, Sweden. Street pictures by Piero Damiani.

I have a friend in Australia. His name is Piero Damiani and he is a big fan of cold weather. Every winter (in northern hemisphere) he spends holidays in cold regions. Last times he was travelling across Canada and North-Western Europe.

Here is the list of previous posts with Piero Damiani‘s gorgeous winter pictures:

- ColdUnited Flickr Pick: -42C in Yellowknife, Canada;
- Photos: Traveling through the winter cold – Edmonton, Canada;
- Traveling through the winter cold – Jasper, Canada;
- Traveling through the winter cold – Reykjavik, Iceland.

By the way, Piero is an active member of the Flickr community. All latest photographs might be found in his photostream.

This winter he is exploring Scandinavia, a beautiful land of magic, but mild European winter. The first stop, if I am correct, was Stockholm, Sweden. You know, it’s hard to follow him, as he is a fast traveller.

Further, please, find his pictures of winter holidays in Stockholm, Sweden taken on January 4-5, 2011. Awesome, aren’t they?

Winter in Sweden. A stud-farm in the countryside. Photo by Olle Kjellin.

I have a Swedish friend of mine. His name is Olle Kjellin. He is a speech doctor. He might give you a lot of knowledge about speech, pronunciation, language, communication, brain, learning, memory… particularly about how to best learn a new language.

So Olle lives in the area of Alvesta, Sweden. As he says, it is a very small village with only three populated houses. And he is a big fan of horses. Right, he’s got horses and runs together with his wife a private stud-farm.

One December morning they woke up, opened the door and saw… plenty of snow! Take a look at Olle’s Swedish winter countryside photographs.

A heavy snowfall and strong winds are on their way in over Sweden. Now the company Vattenfall raise preparedness to cope with possible disruptions to the electricity grid.

According to SMHI (weather forcast) expect a drastic weather changes. It is mainly northern mountains to get a lot of snow and wind. The storm is expected to then take the east and south, which in turn means that the entire country is expected to get snow.
