Hello, friends!

Just remembered all cold regions, apart from Russia, are going to celebrate Christmas pretty soon! Here are my wishes to you.

Don’t complain about the cold weather, if it happened on your side. Look at my X-mas iPhone video greeting (a sort of) done, while I was standing on the crossroad in front of Yakutsk City Hall this morning. The outdoor temperature was -44C. Presume it is much colder than yours :)

Take care! Have fun! Take your time to find the best gifts in stores! Enjoy the X-mas fever!

Aaaah, this is really great! Three days ago I published the video about how I and my wife were walking the main street called Lenin Ave. in Yakutsk. In the above vid you can see a lot of snow, people in a hurry and… Well, just watch.

Today I’ve received a reply from Gissur, an Icelandic friend, who made his own video. He was driving on his car through Reykjavik yesterday. A fascinating sight!

Russia’s Prime Minister Vladimir Putin named comfort of living, attraction of investment and nature preservation as the basics of his Arctic program, speaking at the Arctic: Territory of Dialogue international forum.

“I am familiar with various futuristic predictions on the upcoming strife for the Arctic. But we are carefully monitoring the situation in the region, and it is obvious that most of those scenarios have no real grounds whatsoever,” Putin said.

He noted that Russian explorers reached the North Sea back in the 11th Century, and “both history and geography have put the mission of cultivating the region on our people.”

“First of all,” Putin specified, “we are talking about making the conditions of living in the Arctic of good quality and comfortable. This includes careful approach to the traditions of the indigenous people of the Arctic and their economic set-up, while developing the social sphere, the educational and healthcare systems, and forming of the informational environment.”

The second state priority in the Arctic will be supporting new points of economic growth in the region, attracting large investment from Russia and abroad.

“At the same time, I’d like to stress: not a single industrial Arctic project will be realized without considering the toughest ecological requirements. That is a basic principle which we will apply, while cultivating the north of Krasnoyar Region, Yakutia, the Yamal Peninsula and the Shtokman gas field,” Putin stated.

He expects the arctic to become one of the main sources of energy and a key transport hub in 50 years.

It might sound insane, but I love the COLD… Cold weather. Cold climate. Gorgeous angel-like snow. Fragile mighty ice. Unique northern peoples with their traditional way of living… That’s why this blog still exists… and hope, it will have further development :)

Please, watch the above video slideshow presented by the Uummannaq Music project (the world’s northernmost moving music platform based at the Children’s Home in Uummannaq, Greenland, 590 kilometers north of the Artic Circle) and share Greenland kids’ JOY ABOUT COLD!

On my side, in the Siberian city of Yakutsk, it’s getting colder and colder. The previous night, on September 12, 2010, was already with -1C. In two days, we are promised to have -4C and even snow-n-rain by the end of the current week! Today I received a message from George Lessard, our Canadian friend, who informed about today’s first frost in Yellowknife!

So… it’s the right time to declare the start of the new Cold United season.

Plans? A lot!

We will follow major significant volunteer/non-governmental/ordinary people’s projects dedicated to cold regions like Polar Circle with Arctic, Siberia, Scandinavia, Greenland, Canada, Alaska… and, yeah, Antarctic. Like Uummannaq Music and other great ones listed on the Cold-Related Projects page.

We will try to keep sharing northern peoples’ experience of living in the cold condition. In my personal turn, I am eager to provide various information on how the life is going on in Yakutsk, the world’s coldest city and capital of the biggest Siberian/Russian region.

Stay tuned and feel free to let us know, what you would love to see on our blog. If you’ve got great cold-related initiatives or proposals, inform us via the Cold United contact form, our Facebook page or the Twitter account @ColdUnited.

The Winter Road Documentary Poster

This is the trailer of Nikolay Evstifeev’s documentary “THE WINTER ROAD. The Land of Fierce…” about the sever work in Siberia’s Yakutia. Here you can see how hard ordinary people’s work can be in the hardest part of Siberia. The documentary won The Best Directing Award at The 17th Saint Anna Film Festival and The Best Cinematography Award at The 29th VGIK Film Festival. Btw, Anton Safronov was a camera man.

The documentary is about Yakutia, the sever land of truckers, gold miners, hunters, and oil industry workers. Extreme conditions are revealed in every capture. Survival at minus 50 degrees Celsius, the road on the frozen river, people’s attitude to nature, wild life… and PEOPLE without false manners and any compromises.

“This movie is very sincere! This is a real big documentary!” said Michael Porechenkov, the chairman of the 29th VGIK Film Festival jury, a famous Russian actor. (more…)

Yeah, I love beer, but it wasn’t the reason of republishing this video. That’s awesome snowy, cold, wild landscapes of Canada!

This video slideshow is pretty old. It was uploaded in 2008. However, the event depicted in pictures is more older. An ice storm happened in Switzerland’s Versoix on Jan. 29, 2005.

Thanks to a Facebook friend Pietro I found this video on YouTube. Just enjoy an incredible spectacle that can be called “The Day After Tomorrow Near Geneva” :)

Video: How to Build an Igloo

By Douglas Wilkinson, 1949, 10 min 32 s

A classic short film that shows how to make an igloo using only snow and a knife.

There is an awesome Yakutian photographer, Masha Dubroskaya. Four years ago she started her journey of the life across South East Asia. She’s got beautiful travel pictures, many of them were published in popular travel magazines. She and her boyfriend Ajay have a blog TraveLiving.org, where, by the way, I found the above “snowy” video.
